In Thai, we add the word “ขนาดนี้” [kanàad níi] or “ขนาดนั้น” [kanàad nán] after an adjective or an adverb to express a specific amount or extent of something. In other words, we say “ขนาดนี้” [kanàad níi] for “this much” and “ขนาดนั้น” [kanàad nán] for “that much.” Let’s take a look at the following examples for better understanding.

Examples

แฟนเราอ้วนจริง แต่ไม่ได้อ้วนขนาดนั้น
[fan rao ûan jing tàe mâi dâai ûan kanàad nán]
It’s true that my girlfriend is fat but she’s not that fat!

ฉันไม่เคยรู้เลยว่าสามีเธอทำกับเธอแย่ขนาดนี้
[chán mai koei rúu loei wâa sǎamii ter tam gàp ter yâe kanàad níi]
I never knew your husband treated you this badly.

หนาขนาดนี้ ใช้กรรไกรหั่นไม่ได้หรอก ต้องใช้มีด
[nǎa kanàad níi, chái gangrai hàn mâi dâai ràwk, tâwng chái mîid]
You can’t use scissors to cut something this thick. You have to use a knife!

เราไม่เก่งขนาดนั้น ทำสองงานพร้อมกันไม่ไหวจริงๆ
[rao mâi gèng kanàad nán, tam sǎwng ngaan próm gan mâi wǎi jing jing]
I’m not that good. I really can’t handle two jobs at the same time.

กินเยอะขนาดนี้ ยังหวังจะผอมอยู่อีก
[gin yér kanàad níi, yang wǎng jà pǎwm yùu ìik]
You can’t eat this much and expect to be skinny.
(Direct translation: You eat this much and you still hope to become skinny.)

เพื่อนเธอสวยขนาดนั้นเลยเหรอ ถ้างั้นทำไมยังไม่มีแฟนล่ะ
[pêuan ter sǔai kanàad nán loei rǎw, tâa ngán tammai yang mâi mii fan lâ]
Is your friend that pretty? If it’s true, how come she doesn’t have a boyfriend?

ห้องสกปรกขนาดนี้ จ้างแม่บ้านมาช่วยทำความสะอาดดีกว่านะ
[hâwng sòkgapròk kanàad níi, jâang mâe bâan maa chûai tam kwaam sa-àad dii gwàa ná]
If your room is this dirty, you’d better hire a maid to help clean it.
