In Thai, “มือใหม่ [meu mài]” is an idiom used to describe someone who is new to a skill or just starting to learn. If you’re in Thailand, you might notice a sign or sticker like the one below placed on the rear window of a car.
It says “ขออภัย มือใหม่ หัดขับ [kǎw apai meu mài hàt kàp]” and it translates to “Apologies, new driver in training!” with หัด meaning “to practice doing something” and meaning “to drive.”
The sign indicates that the driver is still learning or has only recently learned how to drive and is fairly new to the road. It’s a polite way to ask others to be patient and understanding if the driving is a bit slow or not quite up to standard.
