Notes
1. “เมีย [mia]” is an informal colloquial term for “wife” and “ผัว [pǔa]” for “husband.” It’s perfectly fine to use to refer to your close friend’s wife or husband when talking to them. However, in some cases, it can be regarded as rude or impolite, especially when used to refer to a wife of someone of a higher status than you, more senior than you, or someone you’re not close to. The more acceptable and appropriate words to use in all cases and to everyone are “ภรรยา [panrayaa]” for “wife” and “สามี [sǎamii]” for “husband.”
2. “กิน [gin]” does not only mean to “eat.” It can be used with any kind of food or drinks. It’s extremely common to say “กินน้ำ [gin náam]” for “to drink water,” even though there is a word that can only mean “to drink” and is used exclusively with liquid, which is “ดื่ม [dèum].” The word is considered more formal and less used than “กิน [gin].” As in English, where “to drink” can be used to mean “to drink alcohol,” “ดื่ม [dèum]” can also imply the same meaning, while “กิน [gin]” cannot. So it’s necessary to say “เหล้า [lâo]” (alcohol) when alcohol is referred to, if you were to use “กิน [gin].” Apart from these two terms, there is also the word “ทาน [taan]” which can mean either “to eat” or “to drink” and it’s considered the most polite of all. In everyday life situations, it’s best to use “กิน [gin]” with anything you eat or drink.
