When you are obsessed with something you have just obtained or something new in your life, in Thai we use the verb เห่อ “hèr” to describe the obsession. It can be used with either an object, an animal or a person, as long as they are new. Let’s take a look at the examples below.
1.) พี่ชายฉันเพิ่งซื้อรถคันแรก เห่อมาก ล้างทุกวัน
[pîi chaai chán pêung séu rót kan râek, hèr mâak, láang túk wan]
My brother just bought his first car. He’s obsessed with it. He washes it every day.
2.) เพื่อนฉันเห่อแฟนใหม่มาก ไปออกเดทกันแทบจะวันเว้นวัน
[pêuan chán hèr fan mài mâak, pai àwk date gan tâeb jà wan wén wan]
My friend is obsessed with her new boyfriend. They go on dates almost every other day.
3.) เมียผมเห่อมือถือเครื่องใหม่มาก เล่นทั้งวัน ไม่ยอมวางเลย
[mia phǒm hèr meu těu krêuang mài mâak, lên táng wan, mâi yawm waang loei]
My wife is obsessed with her new phone. She looks at it all day. She never wants to put it down.
4.) ลูกพี่ลูกน้องฉันเพิ่งคลอดลูกเมื่อสามวันก่อน ตอนนี้เห่อลูกมาก ถ่ายรูปวันละร้อยช็อต
[lûuk pîi lûuk náwng chán pêung klâwt lûuk mêua sǎam wan gàwn, tawn níi hèr lûuk mâak, tàai rûup wan lá rói shot]
My cousin just had her baby 3 days ago. She’s obsessed with him now. She takes a hundred photos of him per day.
5.) เพื่อนบ้านผมเห่อหมาตัวใหม่ที่เพิ่งซื้อมาเลี้ยงมาก เล่นกับมันมากกว่าเล่นกับลูกอีก
[pêuan bâan phǒm hèr mǎa tua mài tîi pêung séu maa líang mâak, lên gàp man mâak gwàa lên gàp lûuk ìik]
My neighbor is obsessed with the dog he just bought. He plays with him more than with his kid.
6.) ช่วงนี้น้องผมเห่อหุ่นยนต์ตัวใหม่ที่ได้เป็นของขวัญวันเกิดมาก ไม่สนใจตัวเก่าแล้ว
[chûang níi náwng phǒm hèr hùnyon tua mài tîi dâai pen kǎwng kwǎn wan gèrd mâak, mâi sǒnjai tua gào léaw]
Lately, my brother has been obsessed with the robot he just got as a birthday present. He already forgot about his old one.
7.) ไม่ต้องกังวลหรอก ลูกเพิ่งได้นินเทนโดเครื่องใหม่มาก็ต้องเห่อเป็นธรรมดา เดี๋ยวสักพักก็หายเห่อเอง
[mâi tâwng gangwon ràwk, lûuk pêung dâai Nintendo krêuang mài maa gâw tâwng hèr pen tammadaa, dǐaw sák pák gâw hǎai hèr eeng]
Don’t worry. It’s no surprise that our son is obsessed with his new Nintendo. After a while, he will get over it.
