The word “ที่” [tîi] when functioning as a relative pronoun is used like the word “that” in English. However, in some cases, the noun that it follows can be omitted. When The word “ที่” [tîi] starts a sentence or a phrase, it’s usually shortened from “สิ่งที่…” [sìng tîi] meaning “the thing which…” or “what….” (the relative pronoun).

Examples

ที่พูดไปน่ะโกหก
[tîi pûut pai nâ, go hòk]
What I said was a lie.

ที่บอกน่ะ ได้ทำไหม
[tîi bàwk nâ dâi tam mái]
Did you do what you said (you would do)?

ที่อยากได้คือหมาจริงๆ ไม่ใช่ตุ๊กตาหมา
[tîi yàak dâai keu mǎa jing jing, mâi châi túkgataa mǎa]
What I want is a real dog, not a stuffed animal.

ที่ฉันอยากบอกคือ ฉันไม่มีเงิน
[tîi chán yàak bàwk keu chán mâi mii ngern]
What I wanted to say was I don’t have money.

ที่รู้แน่ๆคือ เขาไม่ใช่คนไทย
[tîi rúu nâe nâe keu káo mâi châi kon Thai]
What I know for sure is that she’s not Thai.
