“ก็ต่อเมื่อ [gâw tàw mêua]” is a conjunction quite commonly used by the Thais to express that something will not happen unless something else happens or something else is true. It can be translated as “only if,” “on the condition that,” “unless” or “when,” depending on how you structure the sentence. It’s often used together with the word “เท่านั้น” [tâo nán], which is placed at the end of the sentence to emphasize the meaning. Let’s take a look at the examples below.
1.) เขาจะให้อภัยคุณก็ต่อเมื่อคุณขอโทษเขาก่อน
[káo jà hâi apai khun gâw tàw mêua khun kǎw tôde káo gàwn]
He will only forgive you if you say sorry first.
2.) ผมจะจ่ายเงินสดก็ต่อเมื่อร้านไม่รับบัตร เหลืออยู่แค่สองร้อยบาท
[phǒm jà jàai ngern sòd gâw tàw mêua ráan mâi ráp bàt, lěua yùu kâe sǎwng rói bàat]
I will only pay with cash if the restaurant does not accept cards. I only have 200 baht left!
3.) เจ้านายผมจะขึ้นเงินเดือนให้ก็ต่อเมื่อตัวเขาเองได้ขึ้นเงินเดือนก่อน
[jâonaai phǒm jà kêun ngern deuan hâi gâw tàw mêua tua káo eeng dâai kêun ngern deuan gàwn]
My boss won’t give me a salary raise unless he himself gets it first.
4.) ฉันจะถามเขาก็ต่อเมื่อฉันไม่มีคนอื่นให้ถามแล้วจริงๆ
[chán ja tǎam káo gâw tàw mêua chán mâi mii kon èun hâi tǎam léaw jing jing]
I will only ask him when I have literally no one else to ask.
5.) ลูกชายผมบอกว่าเขาจะโทรมาหาผมก็ต่อเมื่อผมตกลงจะจ่ายค่าโทรศัพท์ให้เขาเท่านั้น
[lûuk chaai phǒm bàwk wâa káo jà to maa hǎa phǒm gâw tàw mêua phǒm tòklong jà jaai kâa torasàp hâi káo tâo nán]
My son told me that he would only call me on the condition that I agree to pay his phone bills.
6.) ฉันคงจะได้ดูคอนเสิร์ตบริทนีย์ก็ต่อเมื่อเขามาเปิดคอนเสิร์ตที่ไทยเท่านั้น
[chán kong ja dâai duu concert Britney gâw tàw mêua káo maa pèrd concert tîi Thai tâo nán]
I’ll probably only get to see Britney at her concert when she holds one in Thailand.
7.) บริษัทนั้นคงจะลดราคาสินค้าก็ต่อเมื่อจะใกล้เจ๊งเท่านั้น
[borisàt nán kong jà lót raakaa sǐnkáa gâw tàw mêua jà glâi jéng tâo nán]
I guess that company will only offer discounts when they’re nearly out of business.
