เทศกาลกินเจ [thêetsagaan gin jay] : (Thailand’s) Vegetarian Festival.
เทศกาลกินเจปีนี้ มีใครกินเจบ้างคะ
[thêetsagaan gin jay pii níi, mii khrai gin jay bâng ká]
Anyone going vegetarian during Thailand’s vegetarian festival this year?
Did you know? People call it the “vegetarian” festival in English but the word “เจ” [jay] in “เทศกาลกินเจ” [thêetsagaan gin jay] actually means “vegan.” For “vegetarian,” we say “มังสวิรัติ” [mangsàwírát]. However, most people often get confused with the difference between a vegan diet and a vegetarian diet and get the two words mixed up. Since “เจ” [jay] is shorter and easier to say than “มังสวิรัติ [mangsàwírát],” a lot of people use “เจ” [jay] to refer to both diets.
