“ถ้า [tâa]” means “if” and “อย่างนั้น [yàng nán]” means “so.” The literal meaning of “ถ้าอย่างนั้น [tâa yàng nán]” is “if so….” In spoken language, we often say อย่างงั้น [yàng ngán] instead of อย่างนั้น [yàng nán] as it’s easier to pronounce.
“ถ้าอย่างงั้น [tâa yàng ngán],” “ถ้างั้น [tâa ngán],” and “งั้น [ngán]” are informal variations of the idiom “ถ้าอย่างนั้น [tâa yàng nán].” All expressions have the same meaning, which is “in that case,” but they’re often translated as “(so)…(then).” They’re mostly used at the beginning of a response to someone’s statement, to introduce an idea, suggestion, decision, solution or a conclusion drawn from or based on what that person said.
It’s very useful for you to know and learn how to use these expressions as they’re some of the most used words in every day Thai conversation and spoken by Thais all the time. Look at these examples below for better understanding.
1.
A: ฉันต้องไปห้องน้ำก่อน
[chán dtâwng bpai hâwng náam gàwn]
I need to go to the restroom.
B: งั้นฉันสั่งก่อนนะ
[ngán chán sàng gàwn ná]
I’m going to order first then.
2.
A: ตอนแรกว่าจะไปหา แต่ฝนดันตก
[dtawn râek wâa ja bpai hǎa dtàe fǒn dan dtòk]
I was going to go see you but it started to rain.
B: ถ้างั้นค่อยเจอกันพรุ่งนี้
[tâa ngán kôi jer gan prûng níi]
So let’s meet tomorrow.
3.
A: ฉันทำเบอร์โทรศัพท์เขาหาย
[chán tam ber torasàp káo hǎai]
I lost his phone number.
B: ถ้าอย่างนั้น ก็ติดต่อเขาไม่ได้สิ
[tâa yàng nán gâw dtìt dtàw káo mâi dâai sì]
So you won’t be able to contact him, will you?
4.
A: สีแดงหมด
[sǐi daeng mòt]
We’re out of red.
B: งั้นเอาสีน้ำเงินก็ได้
[ngán ao sǐi nám ngern gâw dâai]
Make it blue then.
5.
A: ฉันลืมเอาผ้าเช็ตตัวมา
[chán leum ao pâa chét dtua maa]
I forgot to bring my bath towel.
B: ถ้างั้นก็ใช้ของฉันไปก่อน
[tâa ngán gâw chái kǎwng chán pai gàwn]
So just use mine for now.
6.
A: โรมแรมที่พัทยาจองเต็มหมดแล้ว
[rong raem tîi Pattaya jawng dtem mòt léaw]
The hotels in Pattaya are fully booked.
B: ถ้าอย่างงั้น ไปหัวหินแทนแล้วกัน
[tâa yàng ngán bpai hǔa hǐn taen léaw gan]
So let’s go to Hua Hin instead.
7.
A: คอมแบตหมดแล้วอ่ะ
[com batt mòt léaw à]
The computer ran out of battery!
B: ถ้างั้นไว้ดูต่อพรุ่งนี้ดีกว่า
[tâa ngán wái duu dtàw prûng níi dii gwàa]
So why don’t watch the rest tomorrow?
8.
A: ตอนนี้อิ่มแล้ว
[dtawn níi ìm léaw]
I’m full now.
B: งั้นเก็บไว้กินมื้อเย็นแล้วกัน
[ngán gèp wái gin méu yen léaw gan]
So why don’t we keep this for dinner?
9.
A: เซเว่นไม่มีที่จอดรถเลย
[Seven mâi mii tîi jàwt rót loei]
There’s no parking at 7-Eleven.
B: ถ้างั้นไปแฟมมิลี่มาร์ทไหม
[tâa ngán bpai Family Mart mái]
Should we go to Family Mart then?
10.
A: ฉันว่าเขาไม่อยากได้กรอบรูปหรอก
[chán wâa káo mâi yàak dâai gràwp rûup ràwk]
I don’t think she wants a picture frame.
B: ถ้างั้นซื้อตุ๊กตาให้แทนดีไหม
[tâa ngán séu dtúkgadtaa hâi taen dii mái]
So should we buy her a stuffed animal instead?
