Here is a list of frequently used verbs that are followed by the word “ว่า” (wâa). Yes, there’s more than just “คิดว่า” (kíd wâa)! Apparently, ว่า [wâa] is a word that all intermediate learners should already be quite familiar with. In 5 minutes, you might hear a Thai person use this word more than 10 times. Still, a lot of learners do not know very well when they have to use this word. While it is so commonly used, many learners tend to make mistakes and often not say it when it cannot be omitted. Even though ว่า [wâa] appears in nearly every sentence we produce, it is not that simple to grasp its meaning. And that is because it is one of those words that you can’t translate word-to-word from Thai to English.

A lot of learners like to think of it as meaning “that” as in “I think that..”, but that is not always the case. ว่า [wâa] is basically a connector, linking a verb (or in some cases, a noun) with another phrase or clause. While most of the times, it gets translated as “that”, sometimes it could be translated as “if” or just quotation marks. And other times, it cannot be translated at all. The best way to understand the meaning of ว่า [wâa] is to see a lot of examples of how it gets used and grasp the overall concept of this word from a lot of different contexts. And this is why we made this list of examples of “frequently used expressions using ว่า [wâa]” for you! Enjoy.

1. คำว่า [kam wâa] : คำว่า “perfect” ภาษาไทยพูดว่ายังไงครับ
How do you say the word “perfect” in Thai?

2. ชื่อว่า [chêu wâa] : เพลงที่เราได้ยินกันวันนั้นชื่อว่าอะไรนะ
What was the name of that song we heard that day again?

3. รู้ว่า [rúu wâa] : ผมรู้ว่าคุณมีอะไรจะบอกผม
I know that you have something to tell me.

4. คิดว่า [kíd wâa] : ถ้าคุณคิดว่าผมตอบไม่ได้ ก็ไม่ต้องมาถาม
If you think I can’t give you the answer, then don’t ask me.

5. มั่นใจว่า [mânjai wâa] : ฉันมั่นใจว่าทุกอย่างต้องมีทางออก
I’m sure everything has a way out.

6. จำได้ว่า [jam dâai wâa] : ฉันจำไม่ได้ว่าฉันเจอใครบ้างในงาน
I don’t remember who I met in the party.

7. พูดว่า [phûut wâa] : อย่าพูดว่าทำไม่ได้ ถ้ายังไม่ได้ลองทำ
Don’t say you can’t do it, if you haven’t tried.

8. เข้าใจว่า [kâojai wâa] : อ่านแล้วเข้าใจว่ายังไง
What do you understand from reading this?

9. เขียนว่า [kiăn wâa] : ดูสิ ป้ายนี้เขียนว่า ”ห้ามถ่ายรูป”
Look! This sign here says “No Photos”.

10. อ่านว่า [àan wâa] : คำนี้อ่านว่า ”บอ-ริ-สัด”
This word reads “baw-rí-sàt”.

11. แปลว่า [plae wâa] : คุณครูค่ะ ประโยคนี้แปลว่าอะไรคะ
Teacher, what does this sentence mean?

12. กลัวว่า [glua wâa] : เรากลัวว่าเขาจะโกรธ เราเลยไม่กล้าบอก
I’m afraid he’d get mad so I don’t have the courage to tell.

13. บอกว่า [bàwk wâa] : แฟนผมบอกผมว่าผมหล่อที่สุดในโลก
My girlfriend told me that I am the hottest guy on earth.

14. ได้ยินว่า [dâaiyin wâa] : เราได้ยินมาว่าไอ้หมอนั่นมันจะมาด้วย
I heard that fellow was coming too.

15. ลืมว่า [leum wâa] : ฉันลืมว่าฉันวางมือถือไว้ที่ไหน
I forgot where I put my cellphone.

16. ถามว่า [tăam wâa] : เมื่อกี้ คุณถามผมว่าอะไรนะครับ
What did you just ask me again?

17. ตอบว่า [tàwp wâa] : เราตอบเขาไปว่าใช่ แต่เขาไม่เชื่อ
I replied him “yes” but he didn’t believe me.

18. สอนว่า [săwn wâa] : พ่อผมสอนว่าเงินไม่ใช่ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่าง
My dad taught me that money is not everything.

19. เตือนว่า [teuan wâa] : แม่เราเตือนว่าอย่าใช้เงินเยอะเกินไป
My mom warned me to not spend too much money.

20. รู้สึกว่า [rúusèuk wâa] : ฉันรู้สึกว่าเขายังไม่ใช่
I have a feeling that he’s not the one yet.

21. สงสัยว่า [sŏng săi wâa] : ผมสงสัยว่าเขาโกหกผมรึเปล่า
I wonder if she lied to me.

22. ฝันว่า [făn wâa] : เมื่อคืน ฉันฝันว่าฉันไปช้อปปิ้งกับบาร์บี้
Last night, I dreamed that I went shopping with Barbie.

23. เป็นห่วงว่า [pen hùang wâa] : แม่เป็นห่วงว่าลูกจะเหงา ก็เลยมาเยี่ยม
I was worried if you would be lonely, so I came to visit.

24. เกรงว่า [greng wâa] : ผมเกรงว่าเราอาจจะต้องล้มเลิกโครงการนี้
I’m afraid we might have to give up of this project.

25. บ่นว่า [bòn wâa] : เขาชอบบ่นว่าเขาไม่มีเวลาออกกำลังกาย
He always complains that he doesn’t have time to work out.

26. ชมว่า [chom wâa] : ภรรยาผมชมว่าผมเป็นพ่อที่ดี
My wife complimented that I am a good father.

27. อวดว่า [ùad wâa] : เขาชอบอวดว่าแฟนเขารวย
She loves to boast about how her boyfriend is rich.

28. สัญญาว่า [sănyaa wâa] : ผมสัญญาว่าผมจะไม่ลืมวันเกิดคุณอีก
I promise that I won’t forget your birthday again.

29. ปรากฏว่า [pragòt wâa] : ผมกลับไปหาเขา แต่ปรากฏว่าเขาไม่อยู่แล้ว
I went back to see him but it turned out that he wasn’t there anymore.

30. ทายว่า [taai wâa] : ทายสิว่าฉันชอบอันไหนมากกว่า
Guess which one I like better.

31. นึกว่า [néuk wâa] : ฉันนึกว่าเธอกลับบ้านไปแล้วซะอีก
I thought you’d gone home already.

32. แสดงว่า [sadang wâa] : นี่แสดงว่าเธอหลอกเขาน่ะสิ ใช่ไหม
This means you fooled him, didn’t you?

33. สั่งว่า [sàng wâa] : เจ้านายสั่งว่าห้ามกลับบ้านจนกว่าจะทำงานเสร็จ
My boss ordered me to stay until I get my work done.

34. เห็นว่า [hěn wâa] : เราไม่เห็นว่าเขาจะผิดตรงไหน
I don’t see how he is wrong.

35. หมายความว่า [măai kwaam wâa] : เราหมายความว่า ถ้าจะไปก็ไปเลย ไม่ต้องรอ
I mean, if you want to go, just go. Don’t need to wait for me.

36. กะว่า [gà wâa] : เรากะว่าจะไปเที่ยวยุโรปสักสองอาทิตย์
I’m thinking about going on a trip to Europe for about 2 weeks.

37. สารภาพว่า [săraphâap wâa] : เขายอมสารภาพแล้วว่าเขาเป็นคนทำ
He finally confessed that he was the person who did it.

38. เน้นว่า [nén wâa] : ลูกค้าเน้นมาว่าต้องใช้สีม่วงเท่านั้น
The client emphasized that we must use purple only.

39. เดาว่า [dao wâa] : ดูจากการแต่งตัวแล้ว ฉันเดาว่าเขาเป็นพนักงานที่นี่
Judging from her outfit, I assume she works here.

40. พนันว่า [panan wâa] : เราพนันได้เลยว่าไม่เกินสามวัน
I bet it won’t last for more than 3 days.

41. ตะโกนว่า [tagoan wâa] : ฉันได้ยินเด็กคนนั้นตะโกนว่า “ช่วยหนูด้วย”
I heard that girl cry out “help me”.

42. กระซิบว่า [grasíp wâa] : เขากระซิบเบาๆข้างหูฉันว่าเขารักฉัน
He whispered gently in my ears that he loved me.

43. หวังว่า [wăng wâa] : หวังว่าทุกอย่างจะเป็นไปได้ด้วยดี
I hope everything goes well.

44. ยืนกรานว่า [yeungran wâa] : เขายืนกรานว่ายังไงก็ต้องทำให้เสร็จให้ได้
He insisted that he would get his job done no matter what.

45. อ้างว่า [âng wâa] : เขาอ้างว่าฉันเป็นคนทำให้เขากับแฟนเลิกกัน
He claimed that I made him and his girlfriend break up.

46. ขึ้นว่า [kêun wâa] เขาขึ้นสเตตัสว่าจะเลิกเล่นเฟสบุ๊คถาวร
He posted on his status that he would quit Facebook for good.

48. สมมุติว่า [sŏmmùt wâa] : สมมุติว่าคุณเป็นเจ้านายผม คุณจะไล่ผมออกไหม
If you were my boss, would you fire me?

49. โทษว่า [tôad wâa] : จะทำอะไรก็ทำ แล้วอย่ามาโทษว่าฉันไม่เตือนก็แล้วกัน
Just do whatever you want and don’t blame me for not warning you.

50. ดูว่า [duu wâa] : แกต้องดูก่อนว่าเขานิสัยดีรึเปล่า ไม่ใช่เห็นว่าหล่อก็จะคบเลย
You need to see first if he’s a good person,
not like “wow, he’s hot, I’m going out with this guy!”.

51. ตัดสินใจว่า [tàdsĭnjai wâa] : ผมตัดสินใจแล้วว่าพรุ่งนี้ผมจะโดดงาน
I’ve decided that I’ll skip work tomorrow.
